As Union Street undergoes its latest exciting transformation, mcIntyres Union Street salon remains fully open and committed to delivering the exceptional hair and beauty services our clients love. With widespread media coverage highlighting the project, from BBC News to The Courier and Urban Realm, Dundee’s city centre is evolving once more, and we’re thrilled to be right in the heart of it.
Work began earlier this month on a major £1.9 million streetscape improvement project by Dundee City Council, making Union Street a permanent pedestrianised space. Funded by over £1.1 million from Transport Scotland (via the Scottish Government) and the council’s capital plan, with contractors Tayside Contracts on site until autumn 2026, the upgrade includes new seating, shelters, a dedicated public events space, fresh planting and greenery, cycle stands, enhanced lighting, and safer crossings at key points like Nethergate and Yeaman Shore.
This builds on the temporary traffic removal from summer 2020, turning the vital link between the city centre and the vibrant waterfront into a greener, more accessible, and people-focused public realm, perfect for shopping, events, and everyday life in Dundee.
For our valued clients, the message is simple and clear: it’s business as usual at mcIntyres. We’ve adapted smoothly to the works around us, ensuring easy access to the salon, uninterrupted appointments, and the same warm, professional welcome you’ve always received. The enhancements are designed to benefit everyone in the area, including local businesses like ours, and we’re excited to see the street become even more inviting.
This latest chapter echoes the pioneering role mcIntyres played in Dundee’s regeneration journey 25 years ago. When we opened our flagship Union Street salon in 2000, a bold move that pushed our budget in the pursuit of contemporary, high-quality design, it helped spark early revitalisation along the waterfront. Our innovative interiors earned us the prestigious Regeneration of Scotland Award that year, plus a Commendation from the British Civic Trust, recognising how a local business could contribute meaningfully to transforming the city.
That forward-thinking spirit was recently revisited in a feature by The Herald, which celebrated how mcIntyres helped ignite Dundee’s broader regeneration story, even joking that we helped bring neighbours like the V&A to the city. It’s incredibly humbling to see our contributions remembered as Dundee continues to grow into the cultural powerhouse it is today.
From our early days to now, mcIntyres has been proud to call Union Street home. As the street transforms into an even more vibrant, welcoming space, we’re honoured to remain part of its story, past, present, and future.
